What has the Edmond Mobile Meals Teen Leadership Council been up to? A lot! This dedicated group of Edmond-area high school students have been meeting monthly since October and collaborating with one another to learn important leadership concepts and contributing to hands-on projects for Edmond Mobile Meals.

Here’s some of the great work they’ve been doing for our community:

October: Nearly 30 students were accepted into this year’s Leadership Council from all the Edmond High Schools, Deer Creek High School and Oklahoma Christian School. Students were introduced to the leadership concepts for the program and got to know each other with some icebreakers.

November: In November, the Leadership Council packed up over 300 Blizzard Bags for Edmond Mobile Meals’ homebound clients to have on hand for the first rounds of winter weather. These Blizzard Bags contain 2-3 days’ worth of shelf stable, easy to prepare and eat foods that are heavy on nutrients so that our clients have something to eat when there are days we cannot deliver meals due to hazardous weather conditions.

Students also made plans to collect items for Edmond Mobile Meals’ clients holiday gift bags. Each year, our council secures and assembles over 300 holiday gift bags that include items such as lip balm, hot cocoa, Christmas candy, socks, or other gift items. We may be the only people who celebrate the holidays with our homebound clients. Students spend the month of November meeting with local donors and collecting items.

December: In December, the Council assembles the holiday gift bags with the items they collected for our homebound clients. Each client receives a gift bag filled with special treats and goodies.

February: In February, students returned to the council meeting prepared to discuss more leadership and DISC concepts. Students split into small groups to discuss and complete a worksheet on the topic of commitment. Next students brainstormed contacts to invite to Edmond Mobile Meals’ annual “Community Champions” week, including local and state lawmakers, local personalities and other influential individuals who are asked to volunteer with Edmond Mobile Meals in March to bring awareness of senior hunger and isolation to those in positions of influence.

Each month, students have volunteered at Edmond Mobile Meals; both preparing and delivering meals to provide them direct interaction with other volunteers and staff members in fulfilling our mission and their requirements for Leadership Program completion.
